High Five For Friday!

It's Friday and it's not just any ordinary Friday guys.

I received a care package from my mom (yeah...I'm 27 and I still get care packages from my mom) so it's basically like Christmas morning over in the 'My Sweet Nomsa' duplex.

So here's a special edition of the 'High Five For Friday' based upon what we received in the most random care package ever!

I went out to get the mail and practically tripped over the box the mailman had left for me all booby trapped on our front porch.
I squealed, grabbed my husband and insisted that my puppy had to be in the room for this monumental event.

I grabbed the pair of scissors that are designated to only be used with boxes and tape (any one else like this? I have like 7 pairs of scissors, each allotted to a certain task. OCD much?).

My first thought was this.....'YARN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YARN, YARN, YARN!'

Followed shortly by...'why did she send me so many razors? I'm not that hairy.'

With my husband asking...'Is that a used towel in there?'

We quickly started sorting through things. I naturally went for the yarn first and got that out of the way so we could dig into the deep box. I then reached for the used towel and started holding it up and examining it. It is a fancy super absorbent towel that supposed to like suck all your water off, but it was definitely used recently.

I put that in the dirty clothes basket. Um....thanks mom?!?!

After the yarn and towel were out of the way, my husband started making 'ooohhhhing' sounds and lo and behold, the best thing that could have ever been in the care packaged for him was in there.

Somebody has a big weekend planned now thanks to his large bottle of scotch. Thanks Randy for including it in the box! Definitely made John's day.

Cooper was next to get his present. My mom couldn't forget about him.

He was so excited for his 'steak' bites that he couldn't sit still. Also, I had to use my masterful photo-shopping skills to remove his puppy boner.

What can I say, the pup loves himself some 'steak' bites!

So after going through the box and pulling everything out, this is what we ended up with....

From left to right, top to bottom: a used super absorbent towel, hello panda cookies!, scotch for the husband, puppy treats, three sport bras that my mom purchased for herself but never tried on until after they were washed and found out they were too small so I got them (thanks for bragging about your chest size mom), Candyland Band-aids?, a very happy broom and dustpan set, new toothbrushes, 7 razors!, a box of tea, a bag of onions grown from her garden, and a mickey mouse t-shirt.

So a bit random right?

I also got some aprons from her vintage apron collection which I am in love with. They have such incredibly darling details.

I walked into the kitchen to find John cooking dinner and sporting one of the organza floral aprons.

Last but not least in our care package was 'the pièce de résistance.'

Two gallon sized ziploc bags full of unwanted samples from Birchbox boxes, sephora gifts, ulta freebies, etc.

There is so much stuff here. Mascara, soap, BB cream, make-up remover, matte face powder, hair products, etc.

You guys...I am going to look like a baby after I use all the face cream, sunblock, skin correcting creams that I got.

My mom hates perfume too, so I got about a dozen different perfume scents to try out.

I am pretty sure I am going to need to create an excel spreadsheet or something to try to manage my new beauty regime.

So all in all....my mom rocks. She is a good puppy grandma, a great mother-in-law and an amazing mom!

Well...I'm off to shave because apparently I am hairy beyond belief.

Have a great night!

High Five For Friday - Saturday Edition!

So guess who has two thumbs and writes a blog at 9pm on a Friday night?

This lady!

This photo was taken a few years ago at my first UGA football game.
Go Dawgs!

My husband is currently enjoying the delicious food and drinks of Savannah with his co-workers while I sit at home lamenting the fact that I already ate the last of the ice cream earlier today.

But soon, yes soon, I will go and join him and we will enjoy the madness of Savannah on a Friday night together (and pick up ice cream on the way home. And wine. And beer).

(Editor's note: It is now Saturday afternoon. Right after I typed that last sentance my husband called me to pick him up so now we have the 'High Five for Friday - Saturday Edition).

/one\

Friday was the last day of work for my husband at one of his summer jobs and he starts his next job July 8th. So for one week we get to enjoy the spoils of island living together!

I have already penned into our calender some sea kayaking, beach laying, bicycle riding, crabbing, spinning at the YMCA, boating, gallivanting around Savannah together and eating lots of ice cream.

I am very excited for our mini vacation together.

/two\

Yesterday I stopped by the Goodwill here and pursed their items. I don't buy clothes really ever (pretty much only when I am in Colorado with my mom) but I splurged yesterday and got a haul of new things for only $23.00.

Two dresses, two shirts, one skirt and one pair of jeans (for an upcoming DIY project).

/three\

I may or may not have beaten my husband's top score on 'Minon Rush.'

NBD

/four\

I finally figured out what all you young, hip people are talking about when you mention spotify.

You kids and your dang modern technology.

I now get to listen to all my pop music on repeat without making my husband's eyes bug out when he sees our Itune charges for the month.

I currently have these four songs on repeat...

/five\

I have always known I have a pretty cool mom, but I really just want to give a special shout-out to her right now because she has been especially awesome this week.

I am a lucky kid that I get to have such a good looking, funny mom.

She likes to stroke my ego by telling me that since I was so perfect as a child, she decided that she shouldn't bother having anymore children since they all wouldn't live up to the standard I set.

I love the fact that since I am an only child I don't have to share her with anyone (except my stepdad, but he's cool, so I'm okay with that).

One of the many reasons that she is cool is because she shows me photos of things she sees at work ...

She works as a code enforcement officer in a not so great area of Denver so she sees plenty of interesting things.

She also shares status updates like these on facebook for everyone to see...

MOM - "My thought for the day....So...after all my thoughts about working out early.....I spent the entire morning wondering/ concerned why my new uniform shorts felt SO uncomfortable....I had to make a pit stop at the MLK building (where we keep our lunch in the fridge) and decided to use the facilities.....I discovered...and this may be tmi...that I had my underpants on BACKWARDS!!!! omg.....I am humbled."

MOM - "I asked my husband if he had planned an amazingly...wonderful....
weekend for my birthday....he just stared at me. I may need to kick his a$$....."

Did I mention that I get my good looks from her???

My mom is on the left, her BFF is on the right.

So in conclusion....

Mom you rock!
Thanks for being so awesome and for making me feel incredibly loved this week.

So that about ends this week's of 'High Five For Friday - Saturday Edition.'
Better late than never I suppose.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

High Five For Friday!

Hey hey hey!

So it's Friday again and this weekend is packed with people, places, things.

The usual nouns I suppose.

But gosh darn it, I am so excited folks about a few things that are happening around here.

So here is my 'High Five For Friday!'

/one\

I drank the Kool-aid everyone.

With the arrival of our new smart phones a few days ago, the first application (or should I use the word 'app?' Is that what the kids are calling it these days?) I downloaded was Instagram.

Guys....it's awesome.

I have only done four photos so far because I am still getting use to documenting all the food I eat for everyone and making sure you all realize how cool my life is, but don't worry...

I will become a full fledged instagram user soon.

Check me out (do we follow on instagram?) under the username 'mysweetnomsa'

/two\

During our honeymoon in Savannah, on the first evening that we were husband and wife, we went on a ghost tour pub crawl with my family.

Thanks to the city's open container laws, we walked from pub to pub throughout the city, drinking alcohol (shirley temples for me as I hadn't yet developed my taste for wine), hearing scary ghost stories and capturing orbs on film.

Tonight we are going on another pub crawl ghost tour with my husband's bff and his girlfriend who are visiting us for the weekend in Savannah.

I will be sure to update you all on how many orbs I capture on film.

/three\

Alright, now before I share this next thing, just a disclaimer....

I was completely and utterly obsessed with John Travolta as a child/teenager/young adult.

Like full on, watching every damn movie he was ever in, dressing up like him for the 4th grade talent show, writing him fan mail, obsessed.

Him as Danny Zuko in Grease was sheer perfection for me and I feel in love with him as only a pre-pubescent teenager can.

With that said....is he not getting so incredibly creepy? I mean really John Travolta? Do you have to always act so weird now?

Last night, he was on the David Letterman show and we were watching it before bed and I swear to you, my husband started giggling so hard at him during this interview.

I posted the full-length video below but just start watching around the 5:08 minute mark. The giggling will start right around 6:15.

/four\

Tomorrow, rain or shine, we are having a beach day gosh darn it.

/five\

I got to try out new Jamberry nail wraps today. An old friend is a consultant with the company and I received a sample to try them out.

It's my first time rocking a statement nail and I definitely love it.

I have used Sally Hansen nail wraps before, but Jamberry uses heat to seal them to your nails. I use my nails so much making jewelry that my nail polish chips within a few days, so I can't wait to see how these hold up. They are a lot thicker than Sally Hansen and seem like a better quality as well.

I am loving all of their different designs. These are some of my favorites...

1/2/3/4

Oh and one other great thing is that the nail wraps are extra long, so you can cut them and use each strip for 2-3 nails. So for the $15.00 nail wrap sheet, you are getting 2-3 manicures.

So, that's what I am excited about this Friday? How about you!

High Five For Friday!

For the past few years (ever since I graduated college and became self-employed), Fridays lost a little bit of their appeal.

Their zest if you will.

Without classes and a boss other than myself, along with the husband being incredibly busy with law school, all the days seem to roll into each other, making some sort of week-long blob.

(how's that for a run-on sentence?)

But ever since John started working a 9-5 this summer (more like a 7:30-6:30) and has weekends mostly off, Fridays are a lot more exciting around these parts.

So I am linking up with Lauren for 'High Five For Friday!'

 photo H54Fbutton-1_zpsa7aaa665.png

/one\

Tonight we are having a picnic in one of the squares in the historic district of Savannah, followed by a book reading by one of my favorite podcasters/storytellers. We are going to see Dan Kennedy from the Moth Podcast talk about his new book, American Spirit and regal us with tall tales and charming antidotes.

Sidenote: I have to leave in 45 minutes to go get John and I am still unshowered, in my workout clothes. I may have been caught up in a game show about musical chairs and I lost track of time. Whoops!

Double sidenote: If my mom was here right now, I know that she would say that I got 'tv hypnotized' and then start shouting '45 minutes!!' She likes it when people stay on track and get out the door on time.

/two\

I finally got to pick up a copy of the June issue of Southern Living Magazine.

I found it, in all places, a gas station in the middle of nowhere Georgia.

One of the boutiques that I sell at had a little shout-out in it, so I wanted to purchase it, hoping that my jewelry items would be in the photo.

No such luck, but still pretty awesome that it was mentioned as one of the best places to shop in Atlanta.

/three\

Tomorrow I have big plans to go running for the first time in forever. I think I have ran once, maybe twice, since the marathon in mid-march. I'm only going to go for 2-2.5 miles and with the summer humidity and heat, that is already seeming like a lot.

With all that said though, I am looking forward to starting to run again.

/four\

Tomorrow morning we have an excursion planned to the Savannah farmer's market again.

Every Friday they send out an email letting you know what's going to be there and I saw today that someone is going to be there tomorrow selling some watermelon juice.

My favorite fruit of alllll time and I can eat it in public without looking like a pig.

/five\

I finished the hat that I was knitting for John.

You know, the totally necessary, completely useful, 100% wool hat for summer.

Maybe I can get him to model it before October, but not very likely.

Have a great weekend everyone!

~ With Love, Ashlee ~

PS... I now have 25 minutes until I have to walk out the door. Showering might not be an option anymore.

High Five For Friday...sort of...

It's Friday which means I usually go into the five things that I am excited about today. But that's not going to happen this week. This post had a lot of potential but was derailed due to my own silly weaknesses.

Today started off with a lot of high hopes. I woke up with a little extra bounce in my step because today is National Donut Day!

(that was going to be my #1 thing for this Friday)

I got up extra early so I could find the best donut place in town, buy a bag of donuts and scarf down some sugar, all under the guise of having material for my blog post today.

Well....I found the best donut place in Savannah...

I bought some donuts....

And I scarfed down.

And scarfed down.

And scarfed down.

Guys.... I am not as young as I used to be.
I went from super freaking excited about donuts to feeling like I may vomit up some sugar cubes real quick.

I don't mean to brag but back in my heyday, I used to be able to get down nine krispy kreme donuts in one sitting.

No big deal.

But today....I ate an apple fritter (not a donut per-say but in the donut family. It's the second cousin of donuts), two cinnamon sugar donuts and a smallish maple bar.

I feel like poo.

I talked to my mom on the phone earlier and she was very animated in telling me a story and I kept feeling like my brain was just going to stop or my heart was going to explode.

I took over a 900 photographs of about a dozen new items this afternoon. I had to take so many photos because my hands were shaking so hard from the sugar buzz I've got going on.

So National Donut Day...screw you!

You made me weak and fall hard for your deep fried sugary goodness and now I may go into a diabetic coma by early evening.

So back to the beginning of this blog post....at the start of the day, I was excited about five things today...but now I am just hoping to make it through the day.

~ With Love, Ashlee ~

PS....Tomorrow I am going to be more responsible and only eat two donuts for breakfast.

High Five For Friday!

It's been a few months since my last 'High Five For Friday' post despite the fact that I have been known to enjoy a Friday or two in the past.

So here are my top five things I am excited about today...

1/ The Farmer's Market!

Tomorrow the husband and I are going to our first Farmer's Market of the season and

am
 e.x.c.i.t.e.d.

Maybe its because we are pretty much vegans and love our veggies, maybe it's because I have an 'official' farmer's market dress that I only wear at one, or maybe its because I want an excuse to buy stuff.... but man oh man, I am stoked for tomorrow morning.

We are visiting a new farmer's market that's big and supposedly has farmers selling out of their goods around 10:00am, so I am going to be there bright and early with my reusable bags, sun bonnet and smugness-in-hand, ready to buy local, organic food.

And this is my farmer's market dress...

what...don't you have one?

2/ Exploring...

After the market we are going to go explore Savannah looking for possible neighborhoods we might like to live in once he is done with school next year.

It's kind of weird to think we might be living permanently in Savannah this time next year, but I should be used to it now as we tend to be pretty mobile people.

In the last five years we have lived in Colorado, Virginia, Back to Colorado, Washington DC, Athens Georgia, Atlanta Georgia, Decatur Georgia and maybe soon Savannah Georgia...

3/ The Beach

I already hung out on the beach for an hour earlier today, but I think it might be fun if we have a picnic and hang out at the beach on Sunday.

John hasn't really had a chance to go the beach yet despite the fact we are currently living .5 miles away from it.

And I refuse to go in the water without him standing by as my lifeguard.

4/ Ice cream

I will have some this weekend.

Believe me, I will....

I went to Leopold's last week in Savannah after discovering they are the 5th best ice cream shop in the world.

I found out this fact and within two hours I was experiencing their deliciousness.

The long line at the shop was worth standing in, but next time I am not going with the Chocolate Raspberry Swirl (shown above).

Thinking something nutty and with caramel next time.

5/ This weather.

When we first moved to Georiga in early May three years ago, it was easily in the 90's every single day.

I remember thinking at various outdoor events that there was no way I would ever survive the heat and humidity that summer.

I easily lost my body weight in sweat that month.

Now...82 degrees every day.

Seriously....2013 May weather.... you rock.

July....I know you are going to be extra awful to make up for May's laziness.

High Five For Friday!

Howdy Everyone! Today I am linking up with Lauren from 'My Grey Desk' blog and telling you about the five things I am excited about this Friday.

 photo H54Fbutton-triangle_zps678b65ba.jpg

/one/

Tonight we are going to hang out with friends at a bar/restaurant and watch some basketball. We have been cooped up in the house all week, so we are excited to get out, he is excited to drink and I am excited to pretend to watch basketball.

/two/

My college basketball bracket is doing awesome so far.
I am only going to talk about it this once, I swear (maybe twice).

I am not going to pretend to be that 'cool girl' who knows about basketball and March Madness and what not. I don't know about it really and I am not super interested, but I am competitive and this really stimulates the urge I have to beat my husband at all games.

So far, I am kicking his butt. Hard.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk all the way!

/three/

I made this banana bread yesterday and it is super awesome.

It is oil free, sugar free and I made it using a mixture of oat and whole wheat flour. It is delicious, really moist and not that sweet (it uses the dates and bananas for sweetness).

When you split the loaf into eight slices, only 193 calories per slice.

(If you make the recipe, I made the following changes ...
* Original called for 2 cups whole wheat flour, I did 1.5 cups whole wheat flour, .5 cups oat flour;
* Original called for 1 tsp cinnamon, I did 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice instead;
* Original called for 2 cups mashed bananas, I only had enough bananas on hand for 1.25 cups mashed, so I added organic unsweetened applesauce for the other .75 of a cup;
* I also added 1 tsp vanilla just because I am wild like that)

/four/

We finished Downton Abbey season 2 last night.

I laughed, I cried, I cheered.

/five/

We went running today for the first time since the marathon. We only went two miles, but it was good to get everything moving. I am still surprisingly sore in odd places (i.e. tops of my feet) and felt tired even after two miles.

So that's all the awesomeness I got for now, but can I just talk about one thing I am super bummed about??

Who the hell at ABC decided to cancel Bachelor Pad??

In my superior to the execs at ABC's opinion, it was the best reality/game/dating show ever! It had everything I wanted!

Drama, romance, comedy!

It was the Shakespeare of our time.

I literally gasped out loud when I read about the cancellation today. I had been looking forward to it all year and now....it's not going to happen.

I need to make a petition.

High Five For Friday!!

Happy Friday everyone! It's the 'official' birthday weekend of the husband so instead of doing things I think he might enjoy (aka sumo wrestling), we are doing things he will actually enjoy (aka drinking a lot and eating food that is really bad for us).

So I am linking up with Lauren to share some of my five favorite things today...

one.

If you live in the Atlanta area, you most likely have experienced the awesomeness that is 'The Vortex.'

My husband loves it for its extensive beer menu and double coronary burger (half pound sirloin patty, topped with two fried eggs, six slices of American cheese, eight slices of bacon and is served between two grilled cheeses which serve as the buns).

I am much more delicate and enjoy it for its fried pickles and yokohana burger (pineapple slice, jack cheese and teriyaki glaze).

I am definitely going to be unladylike and will unbutton my pants about half way during the meal.

two.

Picked up some of these bad boys outside of Wal-mart today.

There is really no point in arguing that these are the best. Hands down.

PS....anyone else notice inflation? I mean, I'm addicted to them like crack, so the $3.50 price tag isn't holding me back, but can I say I remember the good old days when they were $2.00 a box?

three.

Tomorrow night we are going to an Improv show with some friends. We had a blast when we went about a month ago, so I am really looking forward to hearing more about drunk sharks and giggling to really bad Obama impersonations.

four.

Someone got their birthday present today!

My mom and stepdad got JE a grill for his birthday so he spent the evening building it and grilling cheddar-wursts on it for us. He absolutely loves it and is currently reading about grilling tips online while I write this.

Please excuse the mess - we were grill building.

five.

Tomorrow my favorite yarn store in Atlanta is having a 20% off EVERYTHING sale!! Also, the first 50 people get a free gift.

You best believe I am going to be there at opening and will not hesitate to throw the elbows to any old lady that gets in my way.

Just kidding.

(not really).

I hope you all have a great weekend!! Eat some girl scout cookies for me!

~With Love, Ashlee~

March 1, 2013

High Five For Friday!

Hey You! It's Friday! Hooray! I'm linking up with Lauren to share the five things I am pretty excited about this Friday.

one.

This weekend the husband and I are doing part 1 of his birthday celebration! It's not for another week, but I have a special day planned and it had to be this Sunday due to scheduling constraints, so that's when we will pretend he is turning the big 3-0.

I am wayyyy more overwhelmed by him turning 3-0 than he is. I keep staring at him and going, 'I can't believe you are turning 30. You're going to be like....30' And then he goes, 'Meh.'

I can't even imagine the third-life-crisis I am going to have in three years.

His big birthday surprise has been just that. A surprise. As soon as I planned out his surprise, I asked him if he wanted to know. This was my way of asking, 'Hey Honey, you know that I can't keep a big surprise secret for very long, so can you please pretend like you want to know so I can tell you and not feel guilty about it not being a surprise?' He told me he wanted it be a surprise, more out of wanting to watch me squirm for a few weeks, rather than actually caring about having a surprise.

I am t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e at keeping surprises to myself, and I figured out what we were going to do over a month ago, so I have been sitting on this damn surprise for way too long and I can not wait until we can all openly talk about how awesome his birthday gift was.

I think on Sunday it is going to feel like I finally got to pee after holding it for far far too long.

two.

This past Birchbox I got a sample of Miss Jessies Pillow Soft Curl Cream. Besides it smelling like a dryer sheet (literally...it says that was what they were going for with the scent on the label) it is so fabulous. I have really wavy, fuzzy and poufy hair and this product actually gives me big, loose curls without making my hair crunchy.

It is honestly the only product that I have ever used on my hair to make it curly that I actually like.

I went out and bought the full size of it from Target for $22.00 and I think I can make it last for about three months, so I consider the sticker shock to be worth it.

(P.S. - if you don't do Birchbox and want to try this product, if you go to Miss Jessies website here, you can get two free product samples of any of their stuff. I really recommend it.)

three.

Tonight we are hanging out with our 'little.'

John and I have been doing Big Brothers, Big Sisters for a few months now and really love our little. Tonight he is coming on over, eating dinner and watching a movie with us.

This is basically just an excuse for me to get to buy frozen pizza and watch 'The Lorax.'

four.

My husband bought me a 'just because' present the other day and it arrived today. I had been wanting to read it for a while but I was number 387 (no joke) in the HOLD queue at the library so it was going to be a few years before I got it. Hoping to dive into it this weekend a bit.

five.

A new Indian food restaurant opened in town today and I am so excited. The hard opening was only today, but it is already getting rave reviews from a lot of trusted sources.

Indian food is my ABSOLUTE favorite (besides the Olive Garden, Chipotle and Panera) so I think if I play my cards right, I might be able to go stuff my face with some saag paneer within the week.

Hey husband, let's go get Indian food this week! Please?!?

High Five For Friday!

I have to say...this was a little bit of a hard post to do today. Yesterday I knew all five things that I was super excited about and going to mention in this post, but when I woke up this morning to a migraine, nausea and stomach cramps, I wasn't too excited about anything.

But my husband put me back to bed with a cold, wet washcloth and a fuzzy heating pad and I slept until most of the pain went away. Nothing like being able to sleep until 1:00pm on a Friday just because I don't feel good.

(Sidenote: days like today I know are going to be missed once we have kids. I can't even imagine how much it must suck to be sick and still be a mom).

Since my illness cancelled out a few of my plans for today, here is my slightly updated list of five things that I am excited about today.

one.

This. Beautiful. Hat.

I love this hat. So stinking much. It is made out of Malabrigo. It has a pom-pom. It was made following my very own pattern.

It is absolute perfection and I have worn it for two days straight and plan on adding a third tomorrow.

Except...

The yarn colors are too light to photograph well. In person, the mint green and the gray are so lovely, but it is very hard to capture the color changes, so I can't use this hat for the photos that I want to use on my pattern.

This problem brings me to my next item....

two.

This. Beautiful. Yarn.

I needed something brighter and bolder to go up against the light gray, so I went out and bought fushsia Malabrigo yarn to knit the hat with.

I think this color combo is going to look great. Light silver gray and neon hot pink.

Any excuse to knit another hat!

three.

I am waking up in six hours so I can go watch my husband participate in a half marathon. I am looking forward to it because...

a) It is a trail run on single track, so he is going to have a blast running through the Georgia mountains.
b) It has been raining yesterday, today, and won't stop until after the race is done.

a + b = muddiest run ever and a happy husband

four.

For the past two weeks, my house became a part of the Bermuda Triangle.

I lost over six packages all filled with work supplies.

And it wasn't just one carrier. I lost them via USPS, UPS & FedEx. Everyone possible lost a package of mine.

As of today though, five of the six have been delivered. I've given up hope for the last lost one. The tracking information says it was delivered last week to a city over an hour away.

I had one package come from California, get to Atlanta, head back out to Kentucky and Ohio, then make its way back to Atlanta.

With the deliveries of packages yesterday and today, my backed up jewelry orders finally got made and shipped out today.

Thankfully all my customers were really cool about it, but gosh, I hate asking people to wait so long for orders to ship.

five.

My new business cards came.

They have my new logo on them.

I made them. They are beautiful.

You aren't going to see them yet though.

I am still waiting on two more things that were shipped separately (please oh please don't get lost) and then I will unveil my new packaging to you.

I hope you all are having a wonderful Friday! I only have 19 more minutes of it here.
Another crazy night in the ATL!

~With Love, Ashlee~
